Attempted Murder Charged Filed Against Stabbing Suspect

JACKSON, Tenn. – Jackson police have charged Melvin Shelton in connection with a Wednesday morning stabbing that critically injured a man. Shelton, 55, is scheduled to be arraigned via video link at 8:00 a.m. Friday in Jackson City Court on charges of attempted first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. The stabbing victim remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition. Just after 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, police were called about a stabbing. The victim was transported to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital with stab wounds to the chest. He underwent emergency surgery. Police believe that Shelton was visiting at a house on the 100 block of Phillips Street. The house is beside an alley that runs between Phillips and Cartmell Street. The victim was reportedly walking through the alley. Shelton allegedly saw the man and confronted him. Shelton is accused of chasing the victim down the alley and stabbing him multiple times with a large knife. Shelton then is believed to have fled on foot and discarded the knife used in the attack. Shortly afterward, officers arrested Shelton in the vicinity of Holland Avenue and Cloverdale Street. He was transported to the Madison County Jail.
