Audit finds $51K missing at Hamblen animal shelter

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (AP) – An audit by the state comptroller’s office has found that more than $51,000 in animal adoption fees and donations for the Morristown-Hamblen Humane Society was not deposited into the facility’s bank account.

According to the audit, an investigation was requested by the Hamblen County mayor after a humane society employee discovered altered receipts.

The audit says a former employee who was questioned by management admitted to backdating one receipt to “borrow” $120. The employee returned the $120 and was terminated. The employee refused to meet with auditors.

Morristown-Hamblen Humane Society Board Chair Gean Ann Sing said in a response to auditors that the humane society now utilizes more than one employee for handling deposits. The board also has agreed to obtain yearly audits.
