Bolivar Mayor Seeks Unity in New Term

BOLIVAR, Tenn- After a heated election, Bolivar re-elected their mayor to serve his second term. Mayor Barrett Stevens said he believes Bolivar has made racial progress, but said the recent election made him realize there was more to be made. “The people that have hard feelings against me, I don’t harbor any grudges,” said Stevens. “I just want us to move forward.” Near the end of the election, Steven’s former opponent, posted racially targeted messages on her Facebook page, messages that Stevens said changed the tone of the election. Hardeman County Mayor Willie Spencer said as the county’s first black mayor, he has noticed progress. “When I ran in 2006, I knew race may be a factor, but I didn’t run on the race card.” Both mayors said working together is the key. “I’ve never been an advocate for separation,” said Spencer. Stevens said his first priority this term is to bring more business to the city.
