Churches Collecting Donations for Oklahoma

JACKSON, Tenn. – In the wake of the deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma, organizations around the country are rallying in disaster relief. That includes those in West Tennessee. The United Methodist Committee of Relief is setting up a drive to collect supplies for storm survivors. They will be looking to collect specialized cleaning kits, which will include laundry detergent, sponges, and cleaning wipes among other supplies. With relief coming from all angles, church officials said to be mindful of what you are donating. “If you’re going to work through the Baptists, Methodists or whoever, find out what their niche is,” said Bill Carr, a disaster relief coordinator with the United Methodist Church. “We all work work on a national organization together as volunteer agencies, working together for disaster. Everybody has a niche, and they do the same thing to keep from multiplying, duplicating services. So find out what your organization does.” Carr also stressed to make sure that all items are new and unwashed. And if you are donating any kind of kit, include only the items requested.
