Woman claiming immunity from law sent back to jail
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A woman who authorities say squatted in a vacant mansion in Memphis still claims to be a sovereign citizen and not under the authority of U.S. laws.
The Commercial Appeal reported Shelby County Criminal Court Judge James Lammey Jr. listened to Tabitha Gentry’s assertion at a hearing on Monday and then sent her back to jail for another month, or until Gentry agrees to a mental evaluation.
Gentry, who goes by the name of Abka Re Bey, says she is a member of the Moorish American National Republic and maintains that she is being held illegally.
A grand jury has before it charges of aggravated burglary, theft over $60,000 and grand larceny against Gentry.
