3 ex-officers guilty in homeless beating
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Three former Knoxville Police officers have pleaded guilty to beating a homeless man.
The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/190C8jj ) reports Jeremy Jinnett, Ty Compton and Chris Whitfield entered their pleas in Knox County Criminal Court on Monday.
The officers were called to Grainger Avenue on Feb. 9 after someone reported that Michael Mallicoat was yelling and waving his arms erratically while walking on the road. Prosecutors say the officers struck Mallicoat with their fists, stood on him, kicked him, hogtied him and dropped him. Mallicoat suffered broken ribs and was hospitalized.
The officers initially were removed from patrol duties and have since resigned.
Sentencing is Aug. 8.
