Repairs to Stop Flooding on Murphy Lane Bridge Completed

WHITEVILLE, Tenn- Residents of Murphy Lane, off of Union Springs Road in Whiteville, said the construction of a new bridge is long overdue. In January, residents were stranded in or out of their homes, due to flooding of their previous bridge. “We were really trapped in or out,” said Gloria McNeal, a Murphy Lane resident. Construction has finally been completed on the new bridge, that stands four feet higher than the previous one; but for some residents in the 27-home community, the construction was a matter of life or death. “People’s lives were really at stake,” said David Sipes, superintendent of the Hardeman County Highway Department. Sipes said after years of trying to get the $400,000 in funding, he could not be happier with the progress. “It took me five years to convince FEMA,” said Sipes. Now residents are only hoping that the new bridge will save them from what happened earlier in the year. “I hope when it’s done the results will be good for us,” said Sadie Woods, a Murphy Lane resident.
