SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. – Waters have dropped drastically since creeks overflowed and storm drains backed up, causing flooding in parts of South Fulton. “We do have some low places in town, flood zones, where this kind of rain is just not going to run off quickly at all,” said Mayor Ed Cassetty of South Fulton. One of the hardest hit areas is the Village Plaza shopping center where nearly every store suffered flood damage, and some are still trying to dry out. But owners said a collective relief effort kept the damage from being worse. “It was a mess out here at the time, but we just have some great people here,” said co-owner Sam Hancock. “Everybody pitched in. The South Fulton Police Department came out and helped us clean up. So it’s just been a great experience as far as communities coming together to overcome a disaster.” Some businesses and homes did flood. But another concern was the bridges, most of which had to be shut down until further inspection. “We were concerned with washout under those bridges, and so T-Dot came down with a crew,” said Cassetty. “They checked those bridges out, and they’re open now and they should be in good shape.” Crews will clear debris from streets, and stores will work towards opening back up. All the while, South Fulton continues to dry out. “It happens,” said Cassetty. “You just deal with it, and we’re lucky enough that nobody was really hurt.”
