JACKSON, Tenn.- A wet and mild spring and early summer are doing wonders for plants, crops and gardens in West Tennessee. It is especially evident at the University of Tennessee Research and Education Center in Jackson. The center is home to one of the UT gardens designated as one of the state’s official botanical gardens. This growing season is in stark contrast to last year when the area was suffering from extremely dry conditions. UT officials said the great growing weather will be evident during this year’s upcoming summer celebration, even with some plants reaching maturity a little late due to the temperate weather. “Our rainfall for the first six months of this year has almost equaled the entire 12 months of last year. So that gives you an idea of how much rainfall we have had, and of course that helps to make everything look good, ” said Ginger Rowsey, with the UT Research and Education Center. The Summer Celebration with tours, seminars, displays and plant sale will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the campus on Airways Boulevard in Jackson.
