Jackson Police Invesitigating Baby’s Death

JACKSON, Tenn. – A five-month-old baby is dead and now police are investigating how she died. Dessnie Hicks, who said she stepped out onto her front porch for just a few minutes to talk to a neighbor, left the baby in the care of her five-year-old sister. She said she is heartbroken over the loss of her youngest daughter. “I’m hurt,” said Hicks. “I haven’t slept all night. I’m in a lot of pain.” Just before 8 p.m., Thursday, Jackson Police responded to an emergency call at the Allenton Heights Public Housing Complex on East King Street. Upon arrival they found five-month-old Kailynn Hicks unresponsive. Her mother said she was outside on the porch when her five-year-old daughter ran outside. “My little girl said she dropped my baby on the floor,” said Hicks. “And when she came outside, she told me, ‘mommy, my sister is not breathing. Can you come here.'” Kailynn was rushed to the hospital, but died around 9 a.m., according to police. Officials suspect the baby may have suffered head trauma. Neighbors said they were crushed when the learned about the child’s death because they say the mother is a good parent, and they never saw an incident like this coming.” “I know it was no fault of the mother,” said neighbor Veneka Clark. “Whatever happened, it was just sure accident.” “Everybody makes mistakes,” said neighbor Christie Brooks. “Sometimes we could take our eyes off. It just takes a quick second. But I know it’s hard.” Jackson Police and the Department of Children’s Services are investigating to see if there was any wrongdoing. The baby’s body has been taken to Nashville for an autopsy. So far, no arrests have been made.
