SAVANNAH, Tenn- Local property owners said they have been scammed by an unlicensed contractor, claiming to have cleaned their properties that were contaminated by meth. “As a widow, I feel like I’ve been taken advantage of because I didn’t have anyone to advise me,” said a victim, who didn’t want to release her name. Court documents report nearly a dozen properties in Dyer and Hardin County were cleaned by Douglas Earl McCasland, who did not have the proper qualifications. Victims said they were paying him thousands of dollars to clean their properties, not knowing he was a fraud. “You know, I worry that people are living there,” said Julie Gail Adkisson, Hardin County’s Register of Deeds. “Homes affected by meth or health hazardous.” According to Adkisson, property owners are responsible for hiring contractors to clean the meth-infected homes before they are rented out or reoccupied. Adkisson records when the homes have been cleared from contractors. In this case, McCasland was posing as a credentialed contractor. Now he faces 12 felony counts related to the scheme. According to investigators, McCasland obtained more than $100,000 from victims.
