Puppies Stolen from Madison County Rabies Control

JACKSON, Tenn.–Burglars broke into the Jackson-Madison County Rabies Control Department. Employees said the suspects stole three puppies. “The chain and the lock were both missing,” said Lead Rabies Control Officer George Rider. Sometime Saturday morning Rider said the suspect snatched two dachshunds and a pit bull. “It could have been their personal dog that was down here at the time or maybe somebody liked the dog that was in the kennel,” he said. Employees say they believe the crooks cut the chain on the kennel to access the puppies. “There are people that the dogs were recovered from that we’ll talk to to see if they’re connected,” said Lt. Randy Hampton, with the Jackson Police Department. Hampton said puppy thefts are rare. “Sometimes people feel that they can go get their dogs back if they’ve been taken from them,” he said. Rider wants people to understand his department must enforce the law. “If everybody would just vaccinate their pets, keep them on the property, and spay and neuter in a responsible fashion, then I mean there would no longer be a need for us,” he said. Police say the person who took the puppies will likely face a felony burglary charge. Investigators have not made any arrests. If you have information about the puppy thefts, call the Jackson Police Department (731) 425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at (731) 424-TIPS.
