YORKVILLE, Tenn.- The residents who live in Yorkville are no strangers to severe weather. The staff who work at the local elementary school say during severe weather many students will actually leave with their parents. “There was a lot of unrest with parents they didn’t feel their child was safe in the school and they wanted them near them,” said Yorkville Elementary School Secretary Phyllis Joyce. A grant from FEMA given to the Gibson County School District has allowed staff at the school to prepare for construction in the coming months for safe room. “With a safe room I feel like the children and their parents will have a peace of mind that when the parents come they can be with their children in the safe room and that will add safety in the community,” said Joyce. Kenton School is another school in the district with a working safe room and the one that is being designed for Yorkville Elementary School will resemble one another. It will have a dual purpose on top of being a storm shelter. The room can also be used everyday as a classroom. “We feel very fortunate that our district has chosen us to be one of the recipient of this safe room,” said school principal Sharon Lee. The projected projected is expected to hold about 300 people so every person in this small community will have a safe place to take shelter during severe weather. “This is a very close nit community and therefore I feel we are also giving back to the community because we are giving them somewhere to be safe in times of need,” said Lee.
