Milan Aldermen to Consider New Police Cars

MILAN, Tenn. – The newest addition to the Milan Police Department is not a person, but a car and the department hopes the board of aldermen will approve two more. “We haven’t got it striped up yet, but it’s in the works, and it’s about ready to go on the street,” Chief Tim Wright said. They are hoping to get two more Dodge Chargers if the city board approves them. According to Chief Wright, some of their current patrol cars are getting too expensive to keep in running order. “Some of these cars are having extensive repairs, engine replacements, transmission replacements, and our maintenance costs are going up, so maybe this will offset some of that,” Wright said. If the two new cars are approved, Wright plans to assign one to each shift, allowing each officer who lives within five miles of the city limits to take home a patrol car. Right now, some of the officers have to share their vehicles. “The officers will take better care of the cars. They’re going to look better, more conscience of their appearance.” And Wright said citizens will feel safer having more police officers nearby. “The officers can take them to their house, or their apartments or wherever they might live, and you’ve got a police presence wherever they are, and it has some effect as a crime deterrent.” If approved, the department will get the new cars in a few weeks. The board will vote on the two new patrol cars as part of its final budget, Thursday night.
