MCNAIRY COUNTY, Tenn. – The McNairy County Sheriff’s Department has made two drug busts in three days. Neither authorities nor neighbors were surprised. “This time of the year it’s well into growing season for marijuana, and this is usually the time of year that we do find the plants growing,” said Lt. Brad Johnson of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department. “(I’m) not at all (surprised); not around here,” said Jennifer Clayton of Bethel Springs. “It’s getting worse every single day, especially in country areas. They think they can do this and not get caught.” Authorities responded to a burglary call Monday, but found drugs during the investigation. This led to the arrests of Cynthia Layton, Lewis Layton, and Michael Layton. “The deputies responded to a possible burglary in the southern part of the county in the Michie area,” said Lt. Johnson. “Upon looking for some of the stolen items, that’s when they found the marijuana growing.” Deputies recovered more marijuana in Bethel Springs. Once again, it was growing on a residential property. “It’s not an accident,” said Lt. Johnson. “In both cases, they (drugs) were found in what we call planters, which is more like a flower plant.” Neighbors said with drug activities going on so close to them it creates quite the scare, especially with kids in the area. “It scares me in a way because I don’t want people to break in the house or something,” said Clayton. “Here lately the more we see cops and all this stuff going on, it kinda really brings it at home. You think OK well maybe this isn’t a safe place to live in the country anymore.”
