Morning Storm Damages Homes in McNairy County

MCNAIRY COUNTY, Tenn.- Residents in Stantonville said it will take days to clean up the damage left behind by Monday morning’s storm on Gilchrest-Stantonville Road where Emergency Management officials reported numerous trees down. “It looked cloudy but it wasn’t raining or anything when I left at 7:30 a.m this morning,” said homeowner Rosie Sherron. “We are very blessed the Lord didn’t do more damage then what we did have.” McNairy County Emergency management officials told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that straight line winds came through the area uprooting trees and breaking limbs in a path estimated to be a quarter of a mile long and 50 yards wide. “You know I never really thought it was that serious with straight line winds but this is something I could see more with a tornado,” said neighbor Jimmy Robertson. Neighbors said the storm appeared with little notice. It lasted for a few minutes then cleared. The strong winds took down trees as large as 70 feet tall. “My mom, she had come running in telling me and my sister to wake up and get off this side of the house where the trees were falling,” said neighbor Cody Vaughan. Neighbor Katrina WIlkerson who lives where the blunt of the storm hit had several heavy limbs on her rooftop and yard. She told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that she was one of the lucky ones. One of the largest trees uprooted in the neighborhood barely missed her home. “I heard rumbling, really loud noises and a whoosh noise. It must have been God’s hand just moving it away from my house because that’s my bedroom where I was asleep and if it would have fell that way it would have been bad,” said homeowner Kristina Wilkerson. “These 3 or 4 houses right here are damaged, it just hit about a half of a mile radius.” McNairy County Emergency Management Officials said the damage reported on Gilchrest-Stantonville Road was the only damage reported throughout the county.
