Secondhand Uniforms Still Available at Some Stores

JACKSON, Tenn.–School starts Friday for students in Jackson-Madison County Schools. Parents still have time to get uniforms at a discounted price. Customers sifted through clothes at the Goodwill in north Jackson on Monday. “Well, I came in to find my kids some uniforms for school,” said Constance Polk, a parent. Polk has five kids to dress. “Shorts, pants, khakis, whatever I can find really,” she said. Shopping secondhand makes back-to-school expenses more manageable. “We put out new product everyday all day, so even if we don’t have what you’re looking for today doesn’t mean that we won’t have it tomorrow,” said Carissa Naquin, store manager at the Goodwill in north Jackson. The Regional Interfaith Association in downtown Jackson also still has school uniforms available. “We have uniform shorts for $1.25,” said Lisa Tillman, RIFA executive director. “We have uniform shirts for $1.75 and uniform pants for $2.50.” Students can get an outfit for less than $5. “These are all gently used,” said Tillman. “They’ve all been sorted through. They’ve all been looked at for rips and tears and stains and things like that, so we feel like we’ve got a good quality product at a very affordable price.” Polk does most of her shopping at Goodwill. “They really like the dresses and skirts,” she said. The RIFA Thrift Store on Airways Boulevard is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Goodwill in north Jackson is open seven days a week.
