Last Minute Rush For Shots and School Physicals

MILAN, Tenn- With the beginning of the academic year only a day away for Jackson-Madison County Schools, some students will not be able to attend if they do not take care of one requirement. At most schools kids cannot register without their shots. And with the first day approaching, local physicians said they are expecting to see hundreds of kids a day, before then. “This happens every year, so we know what to expect,” said Peter Gardner, M.D., the Medical Director for Physicians Quality Care. Doctors said most parents wait until the last minute to get their child’s vaccinations. “We have extra staffing this week because of it,” said Gardner. Some parents who have take their children at the last minute in the past said they are trying to get in before the end of the week to avoid the massive crowds. “My daughter would have gotten them even sooner, but she’s been out of town,” said Billie Reclusado, a parent. And she said besides avoiding the crowds, there is another benefit of getting it done early. “I don’t want her arms to be sore the first days of school because of shots.” But for the thousands of people who will be in the middle of the back-to-school rush, doctors said to expect a crowd and be patient. “Just make sure they get them,” said Gardner. “Of course the earlier the better. But if parents wait until the last minute, we’re here for them.”
