JACKSON, Tenn. – Several school systems are back in session in West Tennessee, but tax free weekend is going on throughout the state. Parents said it is a helpful holiday, because back-to-school shopping can be expensive. “I know for us items like calculators, school uniforms, and such can really add up,” said mother Celeste Pope. With Tennessee’s tax-free weekend, clothing, school supplies, and more caught be purchased with no sales tax, as long as each item is under $100. “There’s many families that have more than one child, and there’s a lot of things each child needs for back to school,” said Pope. “Any kind of savings is important to parents these days.” For those who are weary of tax-free weekend, many shoppers said the savings can be significant, and it gives them a big break financially. “I think it’s worth it.,” said mother Jessica Bosco. “As long as you can get out there early. I wouldn’t want to fight the rush this weekend. But we got out early and saved probably $20.” “A lot of families can save probably $50 or even $100 just by taking advantage of tax-free weekend,” said Pope. For those shopping in Tennessee, you get an extra day of savings. The tax-free holiday runs through Sunday, instead of Saturday like it does in some other states. “There’s people at work, so having three days to choose from really makes it a lot easier for parents to get items for their kids,” said Pope.
