Nashville superintendent asks board for more days
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The superintendent of the Metro Nashville public school system is asking the school board to add five more class days to the academic year.
The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1ctwJGM ) reported that Dr. Jesse Register will make the recommendation Tuesday, saying more instructional time will help improve academic performance.
Six of the city’s schools are in the second year of a three-year federal grant that pays for more class time. While educators say growth measurements used at the low-performing schools show improvement, individual student tests scores won’t be available until later this month.
The request comes after a recent hearing that was dominated by parents who want a return to the former 10-week summer break.
