School Cleaning Up Mold Problem

SAVANNAH, Tenn.-School is in session at East Hardin Elementary in Hardin County; but for students and some staff the library is still off limits, due to a recent problem with mold. “It’s been an unusually hot and humid summer for us,” said John Thomas, Director of Hardin County School. He said he believes this is the main cause of the fungus. Two weeks before the school year started, maintenance workers noticed mold growing from books in the library and in some classrooms. “Books are sponges. They’re all paper so they look for moisture,” said John Thomas, Director of Hardin County Schools. No classes are in session during the summer so officials said the air is kept at a much lower temperature; but due to the recent heat and excessive rain, fungus formed. “Right now we’re trying to make things as clean and safe as we can,” said Thomas. Although the school year just started, the school’s principal said they are already thinking about next summer to make sure mold is not a problem again.
