Voters in Sequatchie County reject new tax
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – Voters in Sequatchie County have rejected a wheel tax by a nearly 3-to-1 vote.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/14LSHla ) reported the results of a special election Tuesday showed 1,033 votes against the proposed $20 per vehicle levy. Only 355 people for it.
County officials sought the funding to cover anticipated increased insurance costs under the Affordable Care Act. The increase is expected to be about $300,000 per year.
The Sequatchie County Commission passed the tax on May 20, but a petition drive put the issue before voters in the special referendum.
