Crews resume search for man who fell in river

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Rescue crews are searching for a man who was swept away by the Mississippi River near Memphis.

Shelby County sheriff’s spokesman Chip Washington says crews were called to the river Sunday afternoon when 37-year-old Bone Leang fell into the waterway from a boat ramp in Shelby Forest.

Authorities say Leang was at the ramp with his family when he entered the river to fish. Washington says a strong undertow appears to have taken hold of Leang and he disappeared into the river.

Officials say Leang didn’t know how to swim and may have drowned.

Crews weren’t able to find Leang on Sunday. They resumed searching near Mud Island and areas upstream on Monday.

Washington says Leang is Cambodian but it’s not immediately clear if he lives in the area.
