Vigilant Neighbors Prevent Early Morning Burglary

JACKSON, Tenn.- Jackson police are thanking alert neighbors after arresting three juveniles and an adult who were caught breaking and entering into an east Jackson home on Monday. Neighbors in Allenton Heights told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News they awoke to the sound of officers surrounding their building and ordering four suspected burglars to come outside of a neighboring vacant apartment. “We heard them telling them to come outside, they did and they all were standing out in the front here,” neighbor Sharon Brooks said. “Some people around here are just jittery you know; there’s been so many shots fired calls over this way.” Police charged Markedas Artis, 22, with criminal trespassing and burglary. Officers said Artis was found with three other juveniles inside of the vacant home around 5 a.m. Monday after an alert neighbor saw someone climbing into the top window and called police for help. “Well there were police out here everywhere, I was getting ready to go to work and they were over there behind that apartment flashing their lights,” neighbor Shirley Cole said . “I think people are kind of alert now since so much stuff has been going on.” Neighbors said in hopes of lowering crime in their neighborhood, they’re banding together to keep out anyone who doesn’t belong. “At 5 o’clock in the morning they should have been home getting ready for school,” neighbor Erika Wade said “People come over here and they don’t even stay over here and they’re doing the crime so people here are getting fed up.” Police said Artis and the three juveniles arrested all face criminal trespassing and burglary charges.
