Fatal Crash in a McDonald’s Parking Lot Also Injures Dyersburg Teen

STARKVILLE, Miss. – An early morning car accident in the parking lot of a McDonald’s Tuesday has left one teen dead and another injured. The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. in the Hwy. 12 McDonald’s parking lot. Officers say that the driver of the vehicle, Sawyer Steede 18, had been drinking and had two passengers in the bed of his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2 truck. When officers responded to the scene, they found Kaleb Dwayne Barker, 18, had been seriously injured. Barker was transported to a local hospital then airlifted to Jackson, MS where he died as a result of the injuries sustained. Another passenger, a woman from Dyersburg, was also in the bed of the pickup truck and was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained. She was treated at Oktibbeha County Hospital for minor injuries and released. All three persons involved in the incident are Mississippi State Students. Steede has been arrested and charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and is currently out on a $50,000 bond. Details of the incident are continuing to be investigated by the Crash Reconstruction Team of the Starkville Police Department and the Detective Squad. Steede will appear in the Starkville Municipal Court on October 21, 2013.
