HENDERSON, Tenn. – It was as easy as saying the magic word, “Abracadabra” to get students interested in recycling. On Tuesday, West Chester Elementary School students enjoyed a magic show where they were introduced how they properly reduce, reuse, and recycle. “It was cool because he did a lot of magic tricks and made dollar bills come back together after he tore it up,” 3rd grader, Jaden Irvin said. To Barry Mitchell who is the Entertaining Encourager and leader of the show, it’s not just about the magic tricks. “The objective is always education. So the key is that you entertain kids and they will listen and if they are entertained they will listen and therefore there is the message,” Mitchell said. For Barry, it is about the educational experience for the students. “I have noticed that kids respond to music, enthusiasm and excitement, so the more I smile the more I keep them up, the more they are going to be watching,” Barry said. The goal of the show is to get students inspired to make recycling a lifestyle choice and to influence others. “I learned that you can recycle anything like blue jeans, bottles, and newspaper,” 3rd grader Alex Lowe said.
