JACKSON, Tenn. – Jackson police announced the prime suspect in a shooting on Lane College’s campus turned himself in approximately 6 hours after several shots were fired, Tuesday. Police said Vinton Antonio Grant, 18, of Somerville surrendered around 7 p.m. Tuesday for a charge of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. Officials said officers responded to a shots fired call at Lane College around 1 p.m. near the Graves Hall dormitory, Tuesday. Police told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Grant fired at least three shots into the vicinity of some students then reportedly ran north into a waiting Oldsmobile Alero that was parked on Middleton Street. “No text messages at all were sent. I think one should have been sent out because nobody has been talking about it at all,” said student Roscoe Gudger. Officials said Grant is a former Lane student. Right now it is unclear if he was aiming for someone in particular. “Everybody here you know, you sign up for school you want to get your education and that’s what it should be about up here,” said student Reginald Key. Many students were disappointed they were alerted by other students and fellow classmates rather than school leaders about the gunman on campus. “Classes should have locked down, we should have received a text from the school,” said student Randy Powell. ” It’s kind of scary because anything could happen at any given moment and we don’t have any help.” Lane College does have unarmed campus security officers. Students said they would like to see more campus security measures taken. “Somebody can fight right now or start a shooting right now our campus security guards aren’t going to do anything but call on their Walkie Talkies,” said Gudger.” “Who is there to be afraid of? I don’t see any cops out here, I don’t see any guards out here, I don’t see anybody to prevent anything, so I think there should be major changes,” said Powell. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News made calls and visits to Lane College President Wesley McClure’s office for comment but did not receive any comments regarding the shooting. Jackson Police said the college is assisting police in their investigation.
