CORINTH, Miss. – Officers from West Tennessee and across the Mid-South participated in a bomb training class in Corinth, aimed at making them better explosives investigators. “If you came into this with virtually no knowledge of explosives, you’ll learn the different types of explosives, something about them and improvised explosives,” training center director Bowen Johnson said. Tuesday was the second of three days in this training class, which is provided for free by the Northeast Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Center. Officers got hands on experience through investigating a set-up crime scene. “What you’re going to be able to say is that they took back to their smaller municipalities a great deal of knowledge that enables them to act appropriately, contain the situation, and initiate investigations,” Johnson said. The class of 32 officers from Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama do not just learn about bombs, but criminal investigations as a whole. “A lot of it has to do with them getting to know each other in case actual incidents take place, where they have pre-association and feel comfortable working with each other,” Johnson said. “Our job is to protect and serve, and as far as serving we have to do thorough investigations,” said Capt. Chuck Hinds of the Corinth Police Department. “The public is going to expect that from us, and our thorough investigations help prosecute the people who are responsible from these incidents.” The agency has worked with more than 5,100 officers from 401 separate agencies in 10 different states.
