Experts: Watch Out For Bats

With the recent change of the season, experts say this time of year bats are most active. Although bats are not common in Tennessee, they are the leading cause of rabies in humans, which can be fatal. If you find a bat in your house, it’s best to get them removed by a pest company because you don’t want to come in contact with them. Kansas State University veterinarian Susan Nelson says there are some things you need to know for both yourself and your pet. “Bats leave very small punctures so sometimes it can be hard to tell if you‘ve been bitten or not,” Nelson said. You can also check for signs that you have a bat hiding out. Look for holes that are a quarter to one-half inch large. Homeowners may also notice the bat dung, which could be on windowsills or on the ground. Nelson says if you think you may have been bitten, get in immediate contact with your doctor—but also remember that your pets may be in danger too.
