DARDEN, Tenn. – Spectators were taken back in time as a famous WWII B-17 bomber landed right before their eyes. One of the spectators, Bud Sizeman, says he drove from Savannah to Beech River Reional Airport see the aircraft face to face. “Right there, I wouldn’t miss that B-17, the ‘Sentimental Journey’. It was named after the WWII song about the guys that were dreaming about home,” Sizeman said. More than 12,000 of these planes were made during the WWII era. The plane named the ‘Sentimental Journey’ is one of the few left that survived the war and still takes to the sky. “There are 7 of these aircraft’s flying. This one (The Sentimental Journey) is the most accurate variety of the ones that was actually flown in the war. It represents exactly what would have seen in WWII,” said Rich Roberts, WW II B-17 Pilot. The crew aboard the plane is part of a non-profit organization. “The best part about it is we’ll actually get some vets that come out here that have flown this aircraft, worked on it, crewed on it one way or another,” said Roberts. Those who hop aboard the aircraft say it brings back memories of the war and it takes them back in time. “It means a lot I was just a child during WWII but yet it is very much part of my memory and I have read a lot about WWII,” said Sizeman.
