Nashville homelessness commission kicks into gear

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – After years of talking about ending homelessness, Nashville’s Metropolitan Homelessness Commission is finally doing something about it.

With a new director and the help of a national nonprofit called 100,000 Homes, the group took on the ambitious goal of housing 200 people in 100 days.

Director Will Connelly will announce the results of that push on Thursday during a “Welcome Home” party for people who have been able to move into their own homes since June.

Connelly said he believes in a housing first approach to helping the homeless. He said it is hard for people to deal with problems like drug addiction or mental health issues when they are living on the streets.

The commission’s goal is to end chronic homelessness in Nashville in four years.
