Union Students Watch President Fly Into Space

JACKSON, Tenn. — Friday afternoon students at Union University launched a bobble head version of their president Dr. David Dockery into space. Members of Union University’s society of physics say they wanted a creative way to honor a president they’ve grown to love. The organization put a Styrofoam capsule in a high altitude weather balloon. It was an educational lesson about physics, and President Dockery says he was filled with gratitude. “It’s incredibly exciting and to think that these brilliant students would come up with this creative way to honor 18 years of service is very, heartening and encouraging,” Dockery said. Dr. Dockery was elated students got to have fun and learn more about physics. “They have put something together,” Dockery said. “An experiment that worked, they had a hitch, they had to correct it, they learned in the process.” The president says the experience was humbling. “It means more than they know, it’s one of the most exciting days in my tenure at union,” Dockery said. “And they were able to say a word of thanks to me which I greatly appreciate.” This is Dr. Dockery’s last year as Union’s president. Students say they’re planning another launch; but next time, they’ll put a camera inside so they can watch the balloon’s journey.
