JACKSON, Tenn. – Dr. Verna Ruffin has been superintendent for more than 3 months and says she is making significant strides toward making Jackson-Madison County School District better. “I think you step in and you really see what you have to do to be able to get the job done. I think it takes a courageous leader and surrounding themselves with people that really want great things to happen for a district. I think people want that here,” Dr. Verna Ruffin said, JMCSS Superintendent. Dr. Ruffin says listening to the community has been the top priority for the last several months to ensure the district moves forward. “I feel the listening part has been critical to us really hearing what people are saying about our school district,” Dr. Ruffin said. From the listening portion she has been able to narrow down and answer a lot of questions the community has been asking. “I want to be absolutely certain, definitely building the leadership team and making our district so we create a support system for our schools that as been at the floor front and continues to be,” Dr. Ruffin said. During this time she just asks that the community stays patient. Dr. Ruffin said change is already in the works and it will take time. “I have not seen a transformation that were going to make,” Dr. Ruffin said. “I definitely feel that we’ve gotten a lot of information that will help us to make the right transformation and that’s what the listening portion of these first 100 days have been.” Dr. Ruffin says she could work on her time management. The new superintendent says her calendar has been filled for months and as planning for these changes commences it is her goal to stay focused on making things happen. “I want to keep the fast pace but i also have to manage time more so that I now can not just talk about the work but now I have to actually do the work now,” Dr. Ruffin said.
