City of Jackson to Demolish Seven Houses in October

JACKSON, Tenn. — In the coming weeks, the city of Jackson will be demolishing seven abandoned houses, with the first two scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday morning. In recent months, the city has demolished eight properties. The property scheduled for Wednesday morning is located at 32 Holland, and the Thursday demolition is for 206 Peabody. “The first complaint on 32 Holland was issued in June 2012,” Tom Winbush, city of Jackson building and codes director, said in a statement. “The owner walked away and filed bankruptcy. The property went to a mortgage company and the mortgage company didn’t respond during the abatement process.” After a lengthy process of due diligence and many requests for the owners of the house to claim these abandoned properties, the city agreed that the house should be demolished. On Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 8:30 a.m., the house at 206 Peabody will be demolished. Tom Winbush recognizes the demolition can move quickly. “The research and due diligence often takes years to move each property.” “The first complaint on 206 Peabody was issued September 2011. Research found the owner to be deceased. Further research found the property was owned by a mortgage company, which did not reply during the abatement process.” Again, the due-process was followed.
