Jackson-Madison County NAACP Branch Recognized

The “2013 Branch Action Award,” was awarded to the Jackson Madison County NAACP Branch. This is the second, (2007) such award. “I am very proud of our success over the last several years; however we cannot be satisfied. We must continue to build the branch‘s capacity to effectively address local issues,” Harrell Carter said, President of the Jackson Madison County NAACP. “We are blessed to have a good core of passionate members who believe in human rights, voting rights, access for all children to have a good public education system, quality and affordable healthcare, a safe place to raise our families, opportunities for equal employment and to be fairly represented in local governments in making important community decisions.” President Carter was also elected to the Tennessee NAACP Executive Committee and appointed by Conference President (National NAACP Board of Directors of Directors member) Gloria J. Sweet-Love, as NAACP Area Director for Madison, Gibson, Henderson, Carroll, and Chester Counties. President SweetLove also appointed Jackson Madison County NAACP branch member Dr. Jerry Woods as Vice Chair of the Tennessee State Conference Education Committee. Branch Member Mrs. Alicia Brooks was re-elected as the Tennessee State Conference Treasurer. The conference also elected to the Tennessee Executive Committee Branch member‘s Virginia Stackens-Crump and Helen Owens. Also attending was Branch Member Mrs. Daphne Nelson, who serves as the Tennessee State Conference Office Manager, (headquartered in Jackson) and Jackson Madison County Youth Council President DeVonte‘ Anderson. The branch was recognized for its work in voter disenfranchisement, environmental racism, quality public education issues, safe communities/crime reduction, Jackson‘s community unity project, economic inequalities and access to quality affordable healthcare.
