Suspected Armed Robbery Thwarted, Suspect Arrested

SELMER, Tenn – An accused criminal got cold feet before committing an armed robbery, according to Selmer police. But the man still found himself behind bars. “We believe this was actually going to be an armed robbery that got foiled by police,” Lt. Roger Rickman with the Selmer Police Department said. Police said Daniel Schwartz walked into the BP service station in Selmer, and made his way to the bathroom. The suspicious clerk stood by, watching and listening to Schwartz’s every move. “She heard the noise and it sounded like something had fell out of his pockets, several items like metal objects, which we believe to be bullets from the gun,” Lt. Rickman said. Police were waiting for Schwartz, 18, when he walked out of the bathroom, so they said he decided to skip the robbery. “He made a small purchase,” Lt. Rickman said. “He was very nervous. Once he went outside they (police officers) asked him for his identification. He got to fumbling around in his waistband, and they patted him down and found a .357 magnum (gun) on him.” Officers said if it had not been for the clerk’s keen awareness and her quick reaction to call police, this situation could have been far more dangerous. “This could’ve been a very serious situation because they guy was armed. We have belief that he probably had intentions on robbing the store, and somebody could’ve possibly got shot,” Lt. Rickman said. Officers are still looking for the driver of a blue, Chevrolet pickup truck with a firefighter license plate tag. This individual is not a suspect, but a person of interest. Police said he dropped Schwartz off at the gas station. If you have any information in the case, call the Selmer Police Department.
