MAURY CITY, Tenn.- Rickey Riley’s Petals and Blooms flower shop received mail to its Maury City address for more than a decade. Now, however their address is in Friendship because of the Crockett County 911 Board mandated address change. Ricky Riley and his wife said the change confuses customers. “When we opened a flower shop we decided this is where we wanted it to be,” Riley said. “Not friendship. That’s not where our business is.” Riley is not alone in his frustration. Hundreds of businesses and residents in the county were changed January 1. After months of failed negotiations, Maury City mayor Rayce Castellaw hired attorney Jeff Ward to handle the matter. “They sent out a leter to all the residents and illegally used the US Postal Service logo to give it the air of authenticity,” Ward said of the address changes. He said hundreds are affected. “People are not getting their utility bills, they’re not paying their utility bills,” Ward said that is because they are not getting them. Not just an inconvenience, Ward said the changes made by the board were illegal. “We’re not even sure there was a vote. It was just done. According to the records we have, We can’t even find where there was a vote,” he said. Making matters worse Sheriff Troy Klyce said the address changes make handling emergency situations more difficult. Allene Short lives in Maury City and said she was scared for her safety. “I have a police scanner and I listen to it all the time. They say, ‘Is this the new address or the old address I can’t find that number anywhere,” she said. Maury City government buildings are also hard to find. “It’s just like they were trying to get rid of the town of Maury City,” Riley said.
