Police Identify Person of Interest in Early Morning Homicide

EAST JACKSON — An overnight shooting in East Jackson killed one person and injured another. Police released the name of a person of interest. Officers are looking for Carlos Ross, 23. Investigators say Ross lives in Nashville, but has family in Jackson. Jackson police say the shooting happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday at Richcove Apartments on Berry Street. “At the time I was in the bed asleep,” Beverly Mays said, a neighbor. “It sounded like a, just a big shot. You know just like a big rumbling shot.” Officers confirm Clinton Berry, 49, died in the shooting. Officers say his 53-year-old girlfriend was also shot. Paramedics took her by medical helicopter to the MED in Memphis. Police say the incident started with a fight between Berry and another man. “We’re told that they actually fell down the steps and continued to fight,” Captain Tyreece Miller said. Miller says the shooting involved a different man, not the person Berry reportedly fought with. “Mr. Berry approached another man who was walking through the courtyard, and when he approached that man shots were fired by that man,” Miller said. Mays worries about her safety. “ It’s really nerve wracking cause you don’t know which way it’s gonna come,” said said. Police would not say if they found a weapon. Officers say the 53-year-old girlfriend is in critical condition. Anyone with information on Ross’ whereabouts or this shooting is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department’s Major Crimes Bureau at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477 (TIPS).
