Mayor, City Council Members’ Pay Discussed

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Community leaders met Thursday afternoon in City Hall to discus the salaries of the mayor and the Jackson City Council. A committee made up of Jackson vice-mayor, a city council member and four Jackson residents met. “We do have an election coming up and we want to make sure that the salary is fitting for that position and that commitment and that responsibility,” Committee Chair Vicky Foote said. Right now the mayor makes just more than $101,000 per year, and council members earn $500 per month, which equals $6,000 dollars a year. A committee is formed every four years to do this kind of review. No word yet on if the salaries will change. According to the city charter, the salary for the mayor should set by May, and the council’s salary by April of 2014.
