Home Deemed Unlivable After Fire

JACKSON, Tenn. – As smoke and flames filled a Morgan Street home Tuesday afternoon, Judge Hairston was sound asleep in a bedroom. “Somebody knocked on the door, and I opened the door and smoke was coming in,” Judge Hairston said. “By that time the house was full of smoke.” Fire officials said an extension cord caught fire in one room and it then ran up the wall and into the attic. Three adults were in the home when the fire started, but all of them escaped safely. “I just wanted to make sure that everybody was OK,” fire victim Ennix Hairston said. “It’s not as bad as it could have been if we were not at home with our parents.” Ennix Hairston’s mother and father-in-law were living in the house. She said the American Red Cross will provide two days of lodging, food and clothes for them. And although the house is still standing, firefighters said the damage inside is extensive. “It’s just the heavy accumulation of smoke and the water that came out of the attic and down into the bedding, couches and stuff, so it will not be able to be occupied,” Battalion Chief David Pruitt of the Jackson Fire Department said. The Hairstons said at the end of the day, they are happy that nobody was injured in the fire. But going forward, they will have to answer a lot of questions before they can make their next move. “I don’t know what to think about this, I really don’t, I really don’t,” Ennix Hairston said. “I just know it’s one thing after another, and you’ve just got to deal with it when it’s your time.” Firefighters said the entire roof of the home will have to be replaced due to the damage in the attic.
