Miss. DPS drops $6 photo fee on gun permit

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has dropped the $6 photo fee it had been adding onto the $100 charge for a concealed-carry gun permit.
Department spokesman Warren Strain tells The Associated Press that $6 fee was dropped as of Monday.
The change came in response to an attorney general’s legal opinion that says state law sets the price of concealed-carry permit at $100. The opinion says DPS may not charge more.
Strain says the $6 photo fee was added July 1, the beginning of the state budget year, because a private vendor was charging that amount to the department for each gun permit. He says DPS either had to absorb the cost or pass it on to consumers.
The $6 photo fee remains in place on driver’s licenses.
