JACKSON, Tenn.–October 31 is the deadliest night of the year for pedestrians, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The Tennessee Highway Patrol plans to increase patrols for Halloween. The rain cannot keep some trick-or-treaters inside. “No matter what the weather is I’m gonna have fun,” said Victoria Murphy, a parent. Murphy dressed as bad Santa. She and others will hit the streets of Jackson this Halloween. “Police needs to be out patrolling, make sure everybody’s safe case I’m gonna be out there and I don’t want somebody to hit me or my child walking,” Murphy said. The Tennessee Highway Patrol says Oct. 31 is one of the most dangerous days for pedestrians. “According to the Center for Disease Control today children are four times more likely to be struck by a vehicle than any other day of the year,” said Lt. Brad Wilbanks, with the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Lt. Wilbanks says they arranged schedules so more troopers can be on the roads on Halloween night. “We will aggressively remove any drivers from the roadways that are either drunk, impaired, or just driving distracted,” Lt. Wilbanks said. Troopers encourage trick-or-treaters to use sidewalks, stay by the curb, and only cross the road in designated crossing spots. “I have the 15-year-old kid and I don’t want him to get hit by a DUI and I don’t want him to get snatched by Jack the Ripper,” said Murphy. Authorities also suggest parents go with their children trick-or-treating. The Jackson Police Department will also have officers in neighborhoods patrolling on Halloween night.
