USF, Memphis look to get on track in AAC

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – South Florida coach Willie Taggart looks at Memphis and sees a football program that reminds him a lot of his own.

The one-time Conference USA rivals have been reunited as part of the new American Athletic Conference and are trying to re-establish winning ways under two of the youngest coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The 37-year-old Taggart is in his first season at South Florida, which has developed a reputation as underachievers in eight seasons in the Big East.

Justin Fuente, who’s 28 days older than Taggart, is in his second season of a rebuilding job at Memphis.

The Bulls (2-6, 2-2) and Tigers (2-6, 0-4) face each other for the first time since the 2008 St. Petersburg Bowl on Saturday night.
