Woolfork Deadline to Resign Nears

JACKSON, Tenn-Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork has less than 72-hours to turn in his resignation or face an ouster. According to the county attorney, the sheriff has until 5 p.m. Monday to turn in his resignation. The sheriff has given no indication of what he will do. After receiving the findings of an independent investigation into the sheriff’s alleged sexual harassment of two female deputies, the county commission voted on Monday to give him seven days to resign or they would file an ouster lawsuit. That independent investigation could cost the county up to $25,000. The Nashville attorney who conducted it has not billed the county, yet. It is not known if Woolfork will face criminal charges involving a domestic incident with one of the deputies, Sharon Sangster. She was granted a year-long protection order against the sheriff, based on an October 10 argument at her Jackson home. She told officers Woolfork tried to force her to have sex and grabbed her hard enough to leave bruises. On November 13, Jackson police announced they had handed over their investigation to the Shelby County District Attorney’s office, who is handling the case. A spokesman for General Amy Weirich released a statement Friday which said, “as with any criminal investigation, there is no prescribed timetable for its completion.” WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News wanted to know if Sheriff Woolfork’s pension would be affected should he resign or be forced out of office through ouster. According to the Madison County Human Resources Office, Woolfork could lose his retirement only if he was convicted of a felony arising out of his official capacity.
