JACKSON, Tenn.–The deadline passed for Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork to submit his resignation. The county attorney plans to investigate more before filing an ouster lawsuit. Madison County Commissioner Larry Lowrance commented Tuesday on Woolfork‘s decision not to step down. “I was disappointed,” Lowrance said. “I was hoping and thinking that was the best for the county, the taxpayers, for the sheriff, and his family and all concerned.” If the court sides with the county, who will now file an ouster lawsuit through their attorney, Woolfork will be removed from office. “The county commission would be responsible for appointing a successor until the election can be held in August,” said Madison County Attorney Steve Maroney. Maroney says he believes the chief deputy would take over until the commission appointed a new sheriff. Lowrance says he does not have anyone in mind for the position. “We’ve not met and truthfully I haven’t even had any conversations with commissioners about it,” said Lowrance. Maroney says before filing he first needs to investigate more. “It’s important for me to have my ducks in a row before I file,” Maroney said. Commissioners decided to move forward with ouster proceedings following an independent investigation regarding sexual harassment claims against the sheriff. “I just felt like myself we could not wait another 30 days,” said Lowrance. “We had to take action to protect the citizens of Madison County.” Maroney says it is possible he could file the ouster suit next week. He says he is still waiting on a written letter from the county requesting the suit be filed.
