Dyer Workers Rehired After Fired Over Birthday Card

DYER, Tenn. — It was back to work on Tuesday for the seven street workers in Dyer who were fired last week. They were let go after signing a birthday card that the recipient considered inappropriate, but the city mayor said the issue is bigger than that. On Monday, the Board of Alderman voted to give all seven men their jobs back; but the mayor said the reason for the firing was not only because of the birthday card. He said there is a 30-year feud between the female resident and the man who bought the card for the workers to sign. Over the years the streets department have gotten involved and taken sides. He said it was all a matter of the woman feeling disrespected by the workers. “She’s a taxpayer and if it weren’t for the taxpayers there would be no city workers,” Mayor Younger said. According to the mayor, all the men apologized to the board and plan to apologize to the woman. As for disciplinary action, the workers will not receive back pay for the days they were off.
