New App Turns Off Christmas Lights Via Smartphone

JACKSON, Tenn.– Forgetting to turn off your Christmas decorations can be costly and dangerous. But Home Depot Assistant Manager John Maness says a new surge protector by General Electric just made safety easier. “You can actually access this with your smart phone or either your phone or your android device and turn the power to this surge protector off,” Maness said. With the app “Wink: Instantly Connected,” the Quirky surge protector lets you turn off your decorations even while you’re away from home; all you need is WIFI connection and a smart phone. However, even with this app, Home Depot warns holiday shoppers to be cautious when using electricity. One of the most important safety tips during the holidays is don’t overload your surge protector with plug ins. “If you’ve got multiple decorations in your yard that are high demand as far as electrical outlet devices you may want to step up to a more substantial surge protector,” Maness said. But Brook Kreger says holiday decor isn’t the only thing she’s worried about. “My little dog had his mouth on the lights trying to grab them off the tree so the tree almost fell over cause he’s really fat actually,” Kreger said.
