CARROLL AND BENTON CO. Tenn- More than 1,000 people in Carroll county went without power Sunday morning. The Carroll County Electric Department says downed power lines and tree limbs were to blame. In Benton county families like the Fuquas in Big Sandy dealt with the same issues “About 30 minutes before I went to leave our power went out and so my dad went and checked and he said well you can’t leave because there’s a tree down over the driveway,” Megan Fuqua said. The tree fell in the Fuqua’s yard around 10:30 A.M. Sunday morning. After that Megan and her dad were in the dark and without heat for three hours. “We just started a fire, luckily we had a fire place,” Megan Fuqua said. “I don’t know what we would’ve done if we didn’t have one it would’ve been really cold.” In the past, it took nearly 2-3 days to fix power outages but now thanks to the new SCADA system, Benton county electric workers can get to the scene of an outage and have it fixed within a matter of minutes. SCADA, an acronym for supervisory control and data acquisition, is a system that tracks all electric meters in the area. The system was installed back and July and workers say it came in handy. “It’s our computer system that registers our outages and shows us where the outages are and we can actually see them before the customer calls in,” Bret Burke said, Benton County Electric System. If you or someone you know has lost power, make sure to call your utility company to make sure they’re aware of your outage.
