Bond Set For Pair Arrested in Lane College Armed Robbery

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — The two men who were arrested in an armed robbery on the Lane College campus appeared in court on Wednesday. Phillip Dowlen, 19, is facing aggravated robbery and carrying a weapon on school property charges. His bond was set Wednesday morning at $7,500. According to police, Dowlen flashed a handgun and demanded a jacket that someone was wearing in the Edens Hall dorm on the Lane College campus. Dowlen’s accomplice, Terrance Becton, 20, is facing tampering with evidence, unlawful possession of a firearm with an intent to go armed, carrying a weapon on school property, and simple possession of marijuana charges. His bond has been set at $30,000. According to police, Becton gave officers permission to search his book bag, where they discovered a handgun and marijuana. Further investigation determined that was the handgun was used by Dowlen during the robbery. Officers also learned that the gun was placed in the book bag because police had been called, and Becton was attempting to remove the gun from the scene. Because City Councilman Ernest Brooks is representing one of the suspects the cases will be heard in Madison County General Sessions Court.
