Gibson County Homicide

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn.- Gibson County sheriff’s deputies are investigating an apparent homicide near Milan. Deputies said the victim was found with gunshot wounds off of 5 Flower Subdivision Road Tuesday night. Officers said they have two persons of interest in custody. Family members identified the victim as James Cannon, 58, of Milan. They said he was found shot to death while at a friend’s home that he often visited. “It doesn’t seem real like I just want to pick up my phone and call him and I can’t,” said Cannon’s daughter Amanda Rogers. “He loved me, he was so proud of me, he would talk about me to all of his friends. If I told him anything good that happened to me he would cry. I could hug him and tell him I loved him and he would cry.” Deputies ruled the shooting a homicide. Residents told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that the two men in custody were neighbors in the area and friends of the victim. “Every time I’d see him (Cannon) down there you know, everybody was cutting up having a good time and I mean, you could tell just from seeing them together they were old friends they have known each other forever,” said Chad Powers. Chad Powers told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that he is related to one of the men deputies believe to be involved in the shooting. He said the two have never been known for violence. “It’s my personal belief that somebody’s life was in danger and somebody did something about it,” said Powers. “There’s something about this that just doesn’t set right. There is an unanswered question, we might not even know what the question is but I don’t think anybody will be truly at rest with the situation until that question is answered.” Several neighbors living in the area said neither the victim or the two men who were taken into custody had any history of violence. Family members said the victim’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Memphis. Deputies said they anticipate filing charges against the two person’s of interest Thursday and their investigation is ongoing.
